You don’t really know Antioquia until you leave Medellín. It’s in the department’s 125 municipalities where the true paisa pulse lives: colourful towns clinging to the mountainside, plazas anchored by imposing churches, cafés where conversations stretch for hours, and landscapes that go from páramo to jungle without warning.
In this guide, we’ve gathered the ten most beautiful towns in Antioquia, chosen not only for how they look but for what each one adds to the experience of getting to know the region. Some are icons you’ve already seen in photos. Others are small treasures few European travellers know about. All of them are perfect building blocks for a route that combines culture, nature and that unmistakably paisa way of welcoming a visitor.
1. Jardín, the undisputed favourite
About three hours from Medellín, in the southwest of Antioquia, Jardín is arguably the most beautiful town in the entire department. Its flower-filled balconies, cobblestone streets and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, built in semi-Gothic style, make up a postcard scene that rarely disappoints.
But Jardín is much more than architecture. Its surroundings hide the Cave of the Splendour with its indoor waterfall, the Guácharos Cave, and some of the best spots in the country to watch the Andean cock-of-the-rock, an endemic bird of vivid red plumage. Ideal for staying at least two nights and exploring at a slow pace.
2. Guatapé, a town made of colours
Two hours from Medellín, Guatapé has become the most visited town in eastern Antioquia, and for good reason. Its zócalos, the colourful relief panels that decorate the lower part of every façade, tell stories of local trades and turn the town into an open-air museum.
A few minutes away rises the Rock of El Peñol, a 220-metre monolith you can climb via 740 steps to reach one of the most spectacular views in Colombia: an endless reservoir dotted with green islands and peninsulas. Great for a day trip, though staying overnight lets you enjoy it once the tour buses have left.
3. Santa Fe de Antioquia, the mother city
An hour and a half from Medellín, Santa Fe de Antioquia was the first capital of the department and still preserves its colonial soul intact. White houses with wooden doors, eight historic churches, inner courtyards full of greenery, and cobblestone streets that seem untouched since the 17th century.
Its symbol is the Bridge of the West (Puente de Occidente), a 19th-century feat of engineering that crosses the Cauca River. Because it sits in a warm-climate zone, it works beautifully as a short escape from Medellín, especially during Holy Week, when its processions take centre stage.
4. Jericó, the Athens of the Southwest
Three hours from Medellín, Jericó is pure culture. Its colourful houses with carved balconies, steep streets and central plaza make up one of the best-preserved architectural ensembles in Colombia. It’s also the birthplace of the country’s first canonised saint, Santa Laura Montoya, and the host of the Hay Festival, one of the most important literary events on the continent.
This is where the famous carrieles are made, the traditional leather bags worn by paisa muleteers. It’s worth visiting a workshop, hiking up El Salvador Hill to see the town from above, and sitting down to try solteritas, a delicate biscuit made only here.
5. Concepción, the hidden gem of the east
Just over an hour from Medellín, Concepción is the town almost no international traveller visits, and that’s part of its magic. Its cobblestone streets and colonial houses remain untouched, and you can still feel the slow rhythm that other towns have lost to mass tourism.
It’s the birthplace of the Córdova brothers, heroes of Colombian independence, and the family home now functions as a museum. The surrounding area hides natural pools, waterfalls and streams perfect for cooling off. A great choice for travellers looking for the real, unfiltered Antioquia.
6. El Carmen de Viboral, the pottery capital
An hour and a half from Medellín, El Carmen de Viboral is a town entirely devoted to one craft: hand-painted ceramics. The main street is lined with ceramic murals, and inside the workshops you can watch artisans, many with decades of experience, painting each piece by hand.
It’s an ideal destination for anyone who loves art and wants to bring home something truly handmade. Many workshops offer short classes where you can create your own piece and take it home once it has been fired. A town with a strong identity that feels unlike any other in Antioquia.
7. Urrao, the gateway to the Páramo del Sol
Four hours from Medellín, Urrao is one of the least touristy towns on this list, and that’s exactly its charm. Surrounded by mountains, rivers and páramos (high-altitude Andean moorlands), it’s the gateway to Las Orquídeas National Natural Park and the Páramo del Sol, one of the country’s most impressive ecosystems.
Here you’ll find sugar cane fields, hearty goat stews, and hikes through reserves such as ProAves Colibrí del Sol that reveal dozens of endemic bird species. Perfect for travellers seeking pure nature, with the unmistakable warmth of Antioquian country life.
8. Sonsón, the town of 5,000 corners
Four hours from Medellín, Sonsón is one of the most historic towns in eastern Antioquia. Its irregular street grid, so unusual that it earned the nickname “the town of 5,000 corners”, opens onto a historic centre of traditional houses, imposing churches, and an easy, unhurried atmosphere that invites you to wander without a plan.
Its greatest natural attraction is the Páramo de Sonsón, only accessible with a local guide. A perfect destination for travellers who prefer authentic, low-key towns with a strong cultural identity.
9. Santa Elena, the silletero homeland
Only 45 minutes from Medellín, Santa Elena isn’t a separate municipality but a rural district of Medellín itself. Even so, it earns its place on any list for one powerful reason: it’s the home of the silleteros, the flower-carrying farmers who lead the famous Feria de las Flores parade. Their family farms, where the flowers are grown year-round, can be visited at any time.
It’s also home to Parque Arví, a 16,000-hectare forest reserve you can reach by cable car directly from Medellín. Great for a day trip combining nature, silletero culture and excellent countryside cooking.
10. San Rafael, the crystal-clear rivers of the east
Two and a half hours from Medellín, San Rafael is synonymous with water. Crystal-clear rivers, waterfalls, natural pools and forest-fringed swimming holes make this eastern Antioquian town the perfect choice for combining a colonial town with easy nature plans.
The most famous natural pools are El Limón, Las Maruchas and El Taurere, all within easy reach of the town centre. You can add tubing down the rivers and walks through the surrounding forest. A perfect plan for warm weather.
Tips for touring the towns of Antioquia
Before you build your route, a few recommendations that really make a difference:
- Combine nearby and distant towns. A weekend works well for two towns close to Medellín (Guatapé and Santa Fe, for example). For Jardín, Jericó or Urrao it’s worth dedicating at least two nights.
- Book accommodation in advance. In Guatapé, Jardín and Jericó especially, weekends and public holidays fill up fast.
- Try the local food. Each town has its speciality: trout in Jardín, three-meat sancocho in Jericó, solteritas biscuits, and Antioquian tamales in Santa Fe. It’s part of the trip.
- Rent a car or hire private transport. Public transport does reach these towns, but a car lets you explore the surroundings at your own pace.
- Buy local. Many of these towns rely on community tourism. Choosing family-run inns, locally owned restaurants and community guides makes a real difference.
